2010 Annual Picnic Report

The club's annual picnic was held on Saturday, 7/17/2010, and consisted of the annual rifle shoot, kids games, lunch and socializing, and the annual shotgun shoot.  The results of the annual rifle and trap competitions have already been reported at 2010 Annual Shoot Results.  This year CRGC had 169 people who came to the picnic, including 5 emergency service personnel from the Canby Fire Department who were there for demonstrations.  It was another good year for the picnic, and for the people who were there, and the mid-July weather was outstanding.

Jennifer Bentz and David Chinn did the kids games again this year, and once again got excellent reviews.  The games included last years games and a few new ones.  About 15 kids participated and had fun, as evidenced by their smiling faces leaving with their little bags of goodies and prizes.

An hour before lunch there was a demonstration from the Canby Fire Department.  Engine company 61 brought down a fire engine and a paramedic unit for adults and kids alike to look at.  The crew answered questions, showed little demonstrations of the equipment, like the "jaws of life", opened their vehicles for viewing, and provided safety education.  Following the demonstrations, they joined us for lunch and talked with the crowd that had not ventured outside for the showings.  Unfortunately, before the planned end of their visit, they were dispatched to an emergency.  Many thanks to the Canby Fire Department for their time and efforts.

The lunch is always a high point at the picnic, and this year maintained the level of the high bar.  There was barbecued pork and turkey, beans, salads, bread, corn cobs, chips, sandwich condiments, ice cream for dessert, water, soda, and barley pop.  The serving line seemed to move quicker than usual, too, and most people had the opportunity for seconds if they wanted more food.

There were a fairly large number of items given away as door prizes, and our favorite Traeger grill was raffled off for the third and fourth times.  The grill has been an excellent fund raiser for the junior shooting programs, as the first two winners (at the 2009 picnic, and later at the 2010 annual meeting) donated the grill back to CRGC to be raffled again.  It happened again on the first drawing at this picnic, when Spencer Waite won the grill, and he said he was just donating it back to the cause.  On the second drawing for the grill the winner of the BBQ was Leroy Arnett.  Leroy was thrilled with his prize and, with some help, made quick work of loading his treasure in his SUV.

As always, the success of the picnic is due to the people who provide the time and effort to put it on.  This year's picnic committe consisted of Jennifer Kunzman, the picnic chairperson, Ron Kunzman and wife Lauri, Bob Ray, Mike Bruck and son Sawyer, Gary Edwards and wife Joanne, Char Elder, Ken Kubik and wife Sharon and friend David Chinn, Robin Mills, Jennifer Bentz (wife of Karl Bentz), Jim Robertson, Steve Stash, and the master of the BBQ - Robert Parish.  Additional help was supplied by Aaron Cushman, Doug Hill, Robert Johnson, Paul Shuey, and Michael Willams.  The rifle shoot was run by Cal Barrett, Tim Hulse, and Homes Tupper.  The shotgun shoot was run by Dan Stevens.  Other people that deserve a mention of thanks are members Joe Stone for ice, Larry Faist for getting us the corn, and non-member John Weisz Jr. for the corn cooker.
