Firearm and Archery Classes

CRGC holds a variety of firearm safety, training, and orientation classes during the year.  The classes may be conducted by instructors who are CRGC members, or by other organizations which are using CRGC facilities.  The courses are generally of five types:  (1) the NRA Basic Pistol course, (2) training for concealed carry permits in other states, (3) informal rifle and pistol classes, (4) the junior trap program, (5) archery, and (6) other firearm training.  These are discussed in more detail in the following paragraphs.

The NRA Basic Pistol class is held most months around the second or third weekends, but check the calendar for exact dates.  Classes are conducted by CRGC members who are certified NRA instructors.  These classes are open to anyone, whether a CRGC member or not.  The class takes about 7 hours, and includes both classroom and range time.  The fee for the class is currently $50.00, not including the cost of ammunition.  Students may bring their own handguns and ammunition, or they may use a handgun available at the class.  If the student uses a CRGC handgun, there will be a $15.00 charge for the ammunition used.  Successful completion of this class meets the requirement for firearms training for the Oregon license to carry a concealed handgun.

The NRA Basic Pistol classes start at 9:00 AM, and students should plan on arriving a few minutes early.  The classes are limited to roughly 10 students, although most are fewer than 10 students, and registration is suggested.  To register for a class, just send an e-mail to cefi@canby.com containing:

Other classes are scheduled during the year for concealed handgun permits in other States.  The most common classes are for the licenses for Florida and Utah.  Because of the instructor training requirements, these classes are almost always conducted by qualified persons who may not be members of CRGC.  There is almost always a fee for the course, and the fee may include the course as well as a photograph, fingerprinting, and services of a notary public.  These classes occur intermittantly as the instructors become available.  People who are interested in these classes should check the What's New section of the club's web site for news and notices.

There is a variety of training available from shooting disciplines at CRGC.  Some of these classes are done for specific groups - the Boy Scouts, church groups, special interest groups (e.g. cowboy action shooters like the Molalla River Rangers), and so on.  Others are for a more general audience, and are conducted by groups like the Oregon Firearms Education Foundation.  Information about these courses and orientations are also included in CRGC's web site and calendar.  More information can also be obtained from the group sponsoring the training.  There is usually no fee, or only a nominal fee, for these classes.

Shotgun training is available for junior shooters (and certain adults who are complete novices in trap shooting) during the month of March each year.  These sessions, which are held each Thursday night during the month, starting at 7:00 PM each evening, are intended to provide an introduction to trap shooting - safety, procedures, courtesies, and skills - for junior shooters.  The sessions include videos, lectures, and trap shooting in every session.  Each shooter is individually coached during trap shooting to develop the correct skills to become a competent trap shooter.  The sessions are free (including training, targets, and ammunition) for junior shooters, and loaner shotguns are available.  Interested individuals should communicate with CRGC's trap chairman, Wayne Griesenauer, by telephone at 503-849-3400 or e-mail to firewagon1@gmail.com.

Archery classes are available on request for families and groups, although some classes may be scheduled during the year.  For information about archery instruction, e-mail CRGC's archery chairman, Cory Roberts.

Various club members conduct training for pistols, rifles, and archery on an unscheduled basis.  These classes usually originate as a result of an interested individual who rounds up the instructor(s) and students, and gets the class scheduled, or by an instructor who feels it is time to hold a particular kind of training.  The classes usually assume some basic experience, and cover topics like military rifle shooting, long range shooting, practical pistol shooting, reloading, and archery, among several others.  These classes and orientations may not be scheduled as a formal activity, but they are known to club officers before they occur.  The best way to find out about them is to communicate with CRGC via e-mail to crgc@canby.com, and include what interests you and your contact information, and someone will respond with information about what activities may be planned, and contact information for the person leading the session.
