Work Party #3, 2009

Saturday, 9 May 2009

The hottest day so far in June was not quite the best day for outside chores, which was what most of the tasks were, but it was what we got.  The telephone call reminders got several more members to bring tools and equipment from home - including full size tractors with mowers, and gasoline powered string trimmers.  Lunch after the work party was, as usual, sandwiches from Fisher's Meats, soda, and adult beverages.

This work party had three components, two of which lasted all day.  There was the normal work party, which finished around 12:30 PM, and there was the mining of spent bullets from the east 50 yard range, and there was also construction on the pavillion in the park.  The tasks included:

The following people participated in today's work party.  A new member is signified by an asterisk following the member's last name.  Donnie Bledsoe*, Darin Borg (applicant), Jim Burdett, John Carlson*, Ron Carlson*, Michael Chancellor, Steven Dahl*, Joe Dula, Lee Frazier, Al Hostetler*, Doug Howard, Tim Hugo*, Dennis Kenagy, Brian Liebert*, Roger Lowery*, Chuck McClaugherty, Tom Philo*, Dan Postlewait, Bob Ray, Bruce Robbins, Mike Schrier*, Dan Stevens, Bob Sutton, Steve Turner, Andrew Wolfling*, and Bob Yow.

The members working on the mining of the east 50 yard berm (Joe Dula, Doug Howard, Bob Ray, and Dan Stevens) worked until 5:30 PM.  Dan Stevens brought his trackhoe and dump truck, and Joe Dula brought a bobcat skip loader, tractor with rototiller, backhoe, and dump truck.  Earlier in the week, Joe drove to Vancouver, Washington, to pick up the rather large screening machine that will remain at the club for a few more days.

The work on the pavilion by Dennis Kenagy and Dusty Barth continued to about 4:00 PM, at which time Dennis saddled up on the trackhoe that was brought in by Jennifer Kunzman in a display of great faith.  At 5:30 PM Dennis was still digging like a mole around the pavilion, ostensibly moving the dirt to create a smooth grassy surface.  There was not much evidence of success at the time, but undoubtedly someone with greater skill will add some finishing touches.  (Follow-up on Sunday, 6/28/09 - Dennis borrowed a tractor with a front-end loader and finished the rough grading of the area around the pavilion.)

Some work remains to be done on the east and west sides of the pavilion, but the steel is painted, erected, a roof is in place, and it is looking good.  The next step will be to put in an electrical panel, power outlets, and lights.  We will also gravel two paths from the clubhouse and the parking lot to the pavilion.
