Tree Planting

Sunday, 26 March 2006

CRGC received 530 seedling trees - 200 super poplar, and 330 alder - last week, and a small group of dedicated members planted them all today.  The trees, which were purchased from the State of Oregon's D.L. Phipps Forest Nursery, in Elkton, Oregon, will add to the sound barrier to reduce the report of the shotguns during trap shooting.

The trees were planted to add to the protection along the fence line north of the trap pads, and beside the fence along Molalla Forest Road.  The trees along the north fence are now five rows deep, and they are four rows deep along the eastern edge of the club's land.  A double row of trees was also planted along the western boundary of the club's property.  About eight of the trees which were planted last year had died, and were replaced with new seedlings.

The planting was labor intensive, but not as bad as 2005.  Last year it took 15 man-hours to dig 495 holes, but this year we were less efficient, with 24.65 man-hours for 465 holes. (We dug 65 holes by hand before the tractor arrived.)  The actual planting of the trees took 54 man-hours for 516 trees in 2005, but this year it took 25.5 man-hours to plant 530 trees.  This year's totals were 10 workers who contributed 50.15 man-hours over a 7 clock hour span.

The following people participated in today's tree planting work party, and Larry Faist contributed the tractor and auger that were used to dig the holes.  A new member in 2006 is signified by an asterisk following the member's last name.  Jim Burdett, Dahle Gubele, Nathan Gubele*, Zach Heckard*, Dave Johnson*, Dennis Kenagy, Nate McMahon*, Richard Phaneuf, and Ben Weldon*.
