SASS Shoots

The Oregon SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) matches approved by the Board of Directors have been rescheduled.  The safety session required by SASS will be held at CRGC on Saturday, 1 April 2006.  The first match will be held on Saturday, 29 April 2006 on the 50 yard ranges.  The match meeting will start at 8:30 AM, with shooting starting at 9:00 AM.  The match should be complete by 3:00 PM.  Dan Postlewait (503-266-4560, or e-mail) is the SASS committee chairman for CRGC.

Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is a multifaceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West:  single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and side by side double barreled, pre-1899 pump, or lever action shotguns.  The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, "Old West" style.  Contestants shoot in several one-to four-gun stages (courses of fire) in which they engage reactive steel and cardboard silhouette targets.  Scoring is based on accuracy and speed.  The truly unique aspect of Cowboy Action Shooting is the requirement placed on authentic period or western screen dress.  Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, or a Hollywood western star, and develop a costume accordingly.  More information about the sport can be found at www.sassnet.com.

Again, courtesy of OOWSS, if you want to participate in a match, you will need:

• 2 Revolvers
• Any safe single action revolver,.32 caliber or larger
• No target stocks or rubber grips allowed
• LEAD bullets @ 1000 fps or less
• RIFLE (Short Range Rifle or Carbine)
• Any lever action rifle firing a pistol-type cartridge, .25 caliber or larger
• LEAD bullets @ 1400 fps. or less
• Micrometer-type receiver sights not allowed -- old style tang sights are OK
• SHOTGUN
• Any side by side double-barreled or single-shot shotgun without automatic ejectors; any lever action shotgun; any pump shotgun with an exposed hammer (i.e. Winchester'97, Marlin'98, etc.)
• LEAD shot only; #4 or smaller; 10 to 20 gauge
• OPTIONAL -- (for side matches)
• Long range lever rifle --- LEAD bullets only @ 2000 fps. or less
• Long range single shot -- LEAD bullets only & straight-wall cases only
• AMMUNITION -- (average number of rounds for monthly matches - bring more just in case)
• 50 rounds short range rifle
• 50 rounds pistol
• 25 rounds shotgun
• 10+ rounds long range rifle
• CLOTHING --
• "Old West" style or "B" movie clothing is mandatory
• You also need to shoot under an "alias" of your choice
• PROHIBITED ITEMS --
• Ball caps; nylon tennis or running shoes; nylon, plastic, Velcro, etc. accoutrements (including belts, holsters, slings, ammo belts, etc.)
• If it was in use before 1900 you can probably use it; if it came in to use after 1900, you probably cannot.
