2014 Annual Picnic Report

The club's annual picnic was held on Saturday, 7/19/2017, together with the annual shooting competition.  The weather was clear and temperatures ranged from 71 degrees when the shooting started at 8:00 AM, to 75 degrees at noon.  The temperature did not break 80 degrees until after 2:30 PM, so it was a good day for the picnic and the outdoor activities.  The final total was 117 attendees at the picnic.

The lunch is always a high point at the picnic, and this year picnic chairman Ed Grautski started a make-over process with the picnic to get more people involved, and to make it more like a family affair.  Ed requested that attendees bring a dish to share with others, and the tasty side dishes of salads and desserts were definitely a cut above the store-bought variety.  Hugh and Bert Boyle supplied 5 gallons of baked beans, and there was little left over at the end of the meal.  The meat was pulled pork and tri-tip beef which was cooked by Ebner's Meats in Canby.  There was also bread, corn on the cob, chips, sandwich condiments, water, soda, and barley pop.  The serving line moved quickly, and there was plenty of food for everyone, including second helpings if desired.  Leftovers were donated to the Canby Center.

There were over 50 door prizes given out, which included shooting glasses, chest coolers, soft-sided coolers, head lamps, insulated jugs, pocket saws, and tickets for trap shooting.  The Canby Police Department was also there selling raffle tickets for a Colt Competition Rifle to benefit the Canby PD K-9 dog program.  They did a nice bit of business with club members, and tickets will continue to be on sale to members and non-members for another 4 months.

The shooting competitions, as usual, paid the top three shooters in each discipline, and also the person who had the highest total score.  Each competition was structured such that the winning shooter would receive 50 points.  The archery competition used CRGC's bows and arrows shooting at paper targets.  The pistol competition was 10 shots at 10 steel plates at varying distances from 15 to 25 yards.  the highest number of hits won, and in case of ties, the lowest time to shoot the 10 targets was the winner.  The rifle competition was 10 shots shooting offhand at the NRA SR-1 target from 100 yards using any deer-legal caliber rifle.  The trap shooting was 25 targets from the 27 yard line.  The highest score possible for all four events was 200 points.

The winners in the "Top Shot" and the four shooting disciplines were:

As always, the success of the picnic is due to the people who provide the time and effort to put it on.  This year's picnic chairman was again Ed Grautski, assisted by his wife Judy and daughter Winona Hutchens.  Hugh Boyle supplied the beans and assistance in getting things together.  Jim Burdett got the beverages and ice.  The archery competition was managed by Paul Shuey.  The pistol competition was run by Bob Ray with help from Jeff Cohen and non-member Shane Stock, and the rifle shoot was run by Jim Robertson, Ron Rohde, and Homes Tupper.  The shotgun shoot was run by Chuck McClaugherty (who also supplied the screen and projector used for the special meeting of the members after lunch).  Other people that deserve a mention of thanks are members L.C. Parshall for getting the names of attendees and giving out door prize tickets, Joe Dula and Ben Millar for the door prize suggestions, Larry Faist for getting us the corn, Bob Kacalek for the corn cooker and propane, and Allen Stephenson for his assistance everywhere.
