NRA Basic Pistol Classes

Saturday, 25 April 2009

CRGC has reached an agreement with the Portland Firearms Training team (PDXFTT) for PDXFTT instructors to be able to teach NRA classes periodically at CRGC.  The initial classes are going to be the NRA Basic Pistol class, which will satisfy the training requirements for the Oregon concealed carry license.  (For more information about NRA courses, see the NRA web site.)  The PDXFTT charges attendees for the training courses, but CRGC members and their families will receive a substantial discount (see below), and CRGC itself will be paid for range and building rental.

Each of the members of the PDXFTT is a NRA Certified Instructor or NRA Training Counselor.  Many CRGC members will recall that the PDXFTT sponsored and conducted the very successful Women Empowered For Defense and Refuse To Be A Victim sessions at CRGC in September and October, 2002.

In general the firearms classes will be offered on the second Saturday each month from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, including classroom and range time, but because these activities have just been scheduled, only the classes in the Fall are certain to be on the second Saturday.  Check the web site calendar or the newsletter for the actual dates.  The first class will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009.

To register for a class, you should send an e-mail to Dave Hampton at david@pdxftt.org or Dwh45LC@aol.com giving the following information: You may telephone Dave at 503-761-3487 (home) or 503-231-3761.  If you cannot connect with Dave, the Chief Instructors for PDXFTT are Mary and Phil Fleury, and they can be reached at fleury@spiritone.com, or 503-287-7472.

The cost of the class is listed on the PDXFTT web site.  CRGC members, and members of their families, may attend the classes for 50% of the listed price.  (The current list price of the NRA Basic Pistol class is $75.)  In addition to the class fee, which includes the class materials from the NRA, each student should bring two boxes of ammunition for the firearm to be used, but not all of it may be used during the class.  Students may bring their own firearm to the class.  If the student does not have a firearm for the class, the PDXFTT has several Smith & Wesson model 868 revolvers (.38 Special), and other handguns, which the student may use.
