"As-Issued" Military Rifle Shoot

A non-sanctioned "as-issued" military rifle shoot has been scheduled for Sunday, 8/15/10, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM (unless we finish sooner). "As-Issued" in this case refers to any military rifle from any country which has not been altered or modified except as allowed by the CMP Competition Rules (see pages 24 to 27 of the CMP Rules). We are not going to field strip or put a micrometer on your rifle parts. This is an informal match, and we will take your word for the state of your rifle, and your explanation of the military origin of the firearm. Please note, however, that black rifles on the AR-15 design do not all qualify for as-issued unless you can demonstrate that it is, in fact, a CAR-15, pre-1964 AR-15, XM-16E1, M-16A series, or M-4 configuration. The same is true for a Ruger Mini-14. It isn't an as-issued rifle, even though it has essentially the same operating system as the M-1 Garand and the M-14, and shoots military caliber ammunition.
We are making two exceptions to the CMP rules: Optical sights will be allowed, but will be scored in a separate category from iron sights; and commercial or replica versions of military rifles will be permitted.
We will shoot CMP As-Issued Military Rifle Match Course A. This consists of 3 stages and a total of 30 rounds, not counting up to 5 sighting shots. The first stage (prone) takes at most 15 minutes. Stage 2 (standing to prone) is 80 seconds, and stage 3 (standing) is at most 10 minutes. We might be able to get up to three complete matches fired if we wish, with a short lunch break. We have the NRA SR-1 targets in the range shed, and they cost $0.35 each. (The NRA SR target is a 200 yard target, and the SR-1 is a 50% smaller target for use at 100 yards.) See also pages 65 to 67 for firing line procedures - these procedures will be followed. We'll shoot each stage in relays of from 3 to 5 shooters, depending upon the number of participants.
In case of a disagreement, CMP and/or NRA match rules will be used as the competition authority. The decision of the match director will be final.
We'll have scores and bragging rights for two groups of rifles: those with iron sights, and those without iron sights (i.e. probably optical sights). Each shooter be able to fire as many 3-stage courses as we have time for, and each course of fire will count, so if the first attempt is not satisfactory, the shooter can try again (and again, and again). A shooter may also fire more than one course, and use a different rifle on each course. If we are feeling over-confident, and nothing has happened to slow things down, we might try an As-Issued Course B as well (4 stages, 50 rounds of ammunition in total).
We'll try to have at least 100 rounds of each of the kinds of ammunition shooters will need. We already have 5.56 mm NATO, 7.62 mm NATO, and .30-06. We will try to have non-corrosive military ammunition for your rifle, but we may end up using Aguila, Federal, Sellier & Bellot, or Winchester with FMJ bullets and in the military issue bullet weights if we cannot get the real thing. If we do not have the caliber of ammunition you need, you should plan on bringing your own. Remember that the intent of this match is to shoot military firearms and ammunition, not full-race rifles with finely tuned ammunition.
Shooters should plan to be on the range by 9:00 AM, and we'll try to have the first course of fire under way by 9:30 AM. Non-shooters may be dragooned to work in the pits until their turn to shoot comes up. We'll appoint an official scorer when we find out who will be there. Bob Ray and Doug Phaneuf will function as the range officers when they are not shooting. Doug Phaneuf will be the match director.
There will be a $12.00 match fee to cover the cost of targets for one course of fire (3 stages), lunch, and incidentals. The ammunition will be sold at CRGC's actual cost. An additional course of fire will cost $2.00. Mats and pads will be available for prone shooting, but shooters may bring their own if they wish. There will be free coffee, but water and soda will be available for $0.75 each. We'll take lunch orders (sandwiches from Cutsforth's), or order in pizzas, for a mid-match break.
We would like to keep this first match to at most 18 shooters, preferably 12 or 15, so that we can keep some semblance of order, and complete more or less within the time we have. If we do have slots available, though, family members or friends may shoot as well. The sign-up will be first come, first served.
While the range as a whole will be used for the match, we will be using stations 1 though 5 of the 100 yard range. Stations 6 and 7 will be available for use by non-participating shooters, or by match shooters for non-match shooting if a station is open, but non-participating shooters will be under the control of the match range officer, and will be required to follow the range control commands.
